Process for Apply Study Abroad

A person should do proper research before studying abroad or moving abroad. Tests such as the GRE and TOEFL/IELTS are required. University research, financial planning, scholarship applications, etc. With the help of YouTube and the internet, all the resources to ace exams and write effective essays and SOPs can be accessed freely!

Now that you've decided to study abroad. Here are a few points to consider when pursuing your study abroad plans.

Wake Up, Consume, Learn, Repeat:

Take a moment to consider your priorities: Ranking of universities, Ranking of degrees, Quality of research, Location, Placement statistics, or Course structure. Rankings can tell us very little about a degree, to be honest. The ranking is based on several factors such as:

  • Academic Reputation
  • International Student Ratio
  • International Faculty Ratio
  • Citations per faculty member
  • Employer Reputation
  • Faculty/Student Ratio

Preparation for the test

Depending on your course requirements, you may need to take either the GRE or GMAT and a language test (TOEFL/IELTS/PTE). Here are some tips for GRE prep: take a free online test (Princeton, Kaplan, Manhattan, Magoosh) to gauge your aptitude in the Quantitative and Verbal sections and prepare accordingly. You will also need to improve your writing skills and typing skills to improve your AWA excerpts. You will prepare mainly for the speaking section of the language test since you have already prepared for the GRE or GMAT.

Your Statement of Purpose

You can give strangers who read your application a sense of who you are and what you believe. Your SOP allows you to tell them about your wonderful story, introduce your achievements, and convince them that you are indeed unique.

Your CV

In your resume, you will not list what you've accomplished in your life like you are doing in your SOP,  but rather your Education, Research Experience, Coursework, Skills, Positions of Responsibility, and Achievements. It should be brief and concise.

The letter of recommendation

To apply, two letters of recommendation must be submitted: one must be from a professor you worked under, another can either be from your employer or another professor. Furthermore, the number of professors you approach depends on the number of universities you'll apply to, as each professor will provide you with 4–5 recommendations.

Tracking shortlisted universities

The universities you wish to further your studies will have already been decided by now. You'll have to pay a fee if you have more than ten applications. However, the more applications you have, the more you'll have to pay.

This is an important point: you need to track every application however you can. For example, you can create a spreadsheet to list all the deadlines and all the information you've gathered so far and so on. As long as you haven't finalized your university and haven't requested your immigration document, this will be very helpful.

Conducting interviews

Most universities interview students as part of their application process. So what you should do is get in touch with seniors from that university right away; they can recall their experience and give you some tips.

Await the decision

The university will now announce its decisions. But, unfortunately, apart from improving your profile or taking a break after a hard day's work, there's not much you can do here.

Awards/Scholarships

To do this, you need to conduct an exhaustive search of all scholarships offered by the university or any other organization that can help you financially. For example, you will find 50+ scholarships for Indians if you put in 100 hours of research. Out of those, you will be eligible to apply for around 10, out of which you may be shortlisted for five and finally find 2 or 3.

Conclusion

Choosing a course of study is the first step. During and after your master's studies, you need to determine what exactly excites you in that course and where you want to go in the future. Then, relax and spend what little time you have left with your family before beginning your journey in a new country.
